Records Blanquinegres: Mendieta's Copa del Rey boots

In 1999, the Valencia CF captain scored one of the club's best ever goals

On June 26th, 1999, Valencia CF won the Copa del Rey for the sixth time in their history at the La Cartuja stadium in Seville, beating Atletico Madrid 3-0.
Claudio López opened the scoring in the 23rd minute off a pass from Gaizka Mendieta, and confirmed the victory in the 81st minute as he latched onto a long ball from Santi Cañizarez.

In the 33rd minute Mendieta himself contributed, with one of the greatest goals scored in club history.

The captain advanced into the opposition half and, with his back to goal brought down a cross from Adrian Ilie with his chest, controlled it with his right knee and right foot, flicking it past the defence and volleying in with his left foot.

This June marks 22 years since the goal, and the Valencia CF Heritage and Museum Departament have joined with the Heritage  Restoration Intitute of the Universidad Politécnica de València to restore the boots with which Mendieta made his impact in a memorable match. The boots were given by the player to the club and will be exhibited in the Sala Records Blanquinegres section of the Mestalla Forever Tour.
